Leisure
Portoferraio, the island’s capital, is a lively town with an impressive history.
Over the years its very sheltered harbour, considered one of the best on the Tyrrhenian by the great military adventurers and seafarers of the past, has developed all the usual tourism facilities.
Visitors can explore museums and archaeological locations (Roman remains), gardens, and the old town, with its narrow streets climbing the hill to one of the villas used by Napoleon Bonaparte during his short exile on Elba.
Not to mention shops of all kinds, restaurants, pizzerias, wine bars and bars overlooking the sea.
There are opportunities for tennis, golf, cycling and trekking (the Grande Traversata Elbana is a famous walking route across the whole island, with trails climbing from the sea to the mountains).
The San Giovanni Spa, the western Mediterranean’s only Thalassotherapy centre, is also famous.
